Dear AMDAPP Community,

One of the things I value most about AMDAPP is the reminder that we are part of a community. As APPs caring for people with movement disorders, we have the privilege of walking alongside patients and families through some of their most challenging moments, and often over the course of many years. It is deeply rewarding work, but it also requires a tremendous investment of our time, energy, expertise, and compassion.

In healthcare, we often focus on how to better care for others, but we don't always spend enough time considering what allows us to continue showing up as our best selves. Maintaining our ability to care for patients isn't just about clinical knowledge and professional development, it's also about protecting our own well-being. Whether that means setting boundaries, spending time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies, exercising, connecting with nature, or simply creating space for rest and reflection, these moments of renewal are not luxuries. They are investments in the energy, patience, and presence we bring to our work.

I have come to appreciate that self-care is less about achieving perfect balance and more about regularly reconnecting with the people, activities, and values that restore us. When we take time to renew our spirits, we expand our bandwidth for supporting others. We are better equipped to meet the complex needs of our patients while also sustaining our own sense of purpose and fulfillment.

This month, I challenge you to consider using PTO/vacation time without an agenda, plans or appointments to renew your spirit (and bandwidth!) to keep going.

As you read the newsletter, I encourage you to reflect not only on your professional growth, but also on the practices and relationships that help you thrive. Thank you for the compassion, expertise, and dedication you bring to this field every day. And thank you for being part of a community that supports one another as we continue this important work together!

With appreciation,

Arita McCoy

On behalf of the AMDAPP Executive Committee
